About GBAC

Connecting Labrador to the World

The Goose Bay Airport Corporation (GBAC) manages and operates Goose Bay Airport — a vital transportation hub and economic driver for Labrador. With a proud history that stretches back to 1941, the airport continues to connect people, communities, and opportunities across the North and beyond.

Our Purpose

  • Manage, operate, and develop the Airport in a safe, secure, efficient, cost-effective, environmentally sensitive, and financially viable manner.
  • Undertake and promote the development of the Airport lands for uses compatible with air transportation activities.
  • Expand transportation facilities and generate economic activity in ways which are compatible with Airport transportation activities.

About Us

Goose Bay is unique among Canadian airports. The aerodrome is owned and operated by the Department of National Defence, while the Goose Bay Airport Corporation (GBAC), as the civil aviation authority, is responsible for managing all civil aviation activities at the airfield and owns groundside properties within the Civil Aviation Area. This unique arrangement makes Goose Bay one of the few dual-function airports in Canada.

The airfield is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). CBSA officers process general aviation aircraft only, with a maximum of 15 passengers.

The Goose Bay Airport Corporation, established in 1996 as a not-for-profit organization, is governed by an eleven-member board of community representatives. GBAC owns and operates the Goose Bay Air Terminal Building as well as lands outside the airfield. This structure was formalized through a 2011 land transfer agreement with DND, enabling civilian operators-including fuel suppliers and car rental companies-to establish permanent bases for their operations.

The shared use of this capital-intensive aerodrome provides the region with cost-effective civilian air service, maximizing the value of federally funded infrastructure while offering a low-cost advantage that appeals to carriers and tenants alike.

A Message from the Board Chair

Labrador is on the cusp of major developments in hydro and mining. Interest is growing in protecting and developing the North. Goose Bay Airport is a major and world class facility, located next door to all of this opportunity.

Our Board and leadership team are invested in the effort to enhance affordability and air service development and to plan for the future. These are exciting times, full of challenge and opportunity. We have the team to make sure that Goose Bay Airport plays a key role in that future.
