About 5 Wing

5 Wing is located at Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay in Labrador and falls under the operational command of 1 Canadian Air Division. Originally established in 1941 as a joint airfield between Canada and the United States, it served as a strategic location for anti submarine patrols and as a staging point for aircraft enroute to Europe during the Second World War. The site was chosen for its favorable flying weather, accessibility by sea during summer months, ease of construction, and strategic position on the North Atlantic.
Over the years, the role of 5 Wing has evolved significantly from a small station supporting a long range radar site to a dynamic, medium sized base that supports multinational flying operations and hosts a variety of international military and civilian guests.
Today, 5 Wing Goose Bay plays a key role in supporting North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) operations and the projection of air power across the northern and northeastern approaches to Canada. It continues to provide vital support for military training conducted by the Canadian Armed Forces, its Allies, and NORAD. With its adaptable infrastructure, remote and rugged environment, and access to vast airspace, 5 Wing offers a unique and demanding training environment for joint and combined exercises.
