Preparing Your Luggage for Air Travel

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) oversees the screening process for travelers and their luggage, ensuring all items meet security guidelines for air travel.

When it comes to liquids, gels, and aerosols, these must be stored in containers no larger than 100 ml each. All such items should fit into a single transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre.

Keep in mind that baggage size and weight limits can differ depending on the airline. It’s best to check with your airline in advance for their specific policies.

For additional information on what you’re allowed to bring, visit CATSA’s website and look for the  What Can I Bring? section.

Carry-on Baggage

Airlines have individual policies regarding the size and number of carry-on items allowed per passenger. Typical carry-on items include purses, briefcases, laptop bags, and backpacks.

At the security checkpoint, all carry-on luggage is inspected by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA).

To avoid issues, it’s best to check directly with your airline about carry-on size and weight restrictions. Bags that exceed the airline’s limits may have to be checked instead.

Checked Baggage

Items that are not permitted in carry-on bags can often be placed in checked baggage. Airlines set their own guidelines for checked bag size, weight, and quantity, and may also apply fees or limits on the number of checked bags per passenger.

All checked luggage goes through a screening process, and in some cases, bags may be opened for inspection. While locking your suitcase is optional, leaving it unlocked can speed up the screening. If you choose to lock it, check CATSA’s guidelines on approved locks.

For oversized items, the screening machine can accommodate baggage up to 75 cm x 55 cm. Items larger than this will undergo a manual inspection.

Lost or Delayed Baggage

Airlines take steps to ensure that baggage arrives safely and on time. If your luggage is lost or delayed, head to your airline’s baggage claim area in the Arrivals section (note that hours may vary).

You can also contact your airline directly for assistance and updates on your claim.
